Jazz Messengers Receive Unanimous Superior Rating

Congratulations to the Stanley Jazz Messengers who, under the direction of Bob Athayde, received a Unanimous Superior rating in the 19th Annual Folsom Jazz Festival this past January. They earned 3rd place among all the participating middle school bands.

The new CMEA date and venue for bands--not orchestra--is Saturday, May 10th, at Ygnacio Valley High School. It will be a four-hour commitment. Please report any conflicts with previously scheduled activities to Mr. Athayde immediately. bob@stanleymusic.org

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Student Ticket Underwriting Program

The Stanley Middle School Music Department has been given approximately 35 vouchers that can be exchanged for tickets at the box office of any performance in Philharmonia’s 2007-08 season. This will be on a first request/first served basis. Please do not request vouchers if you will not use them. The Orchestra’s venues are the First Congregational Church in Berkeley, Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, the First United Methodist Church in Palo Alto and the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church in Contra Costa County. There are four performances in Lafayette - Tuesday Oct. 9, Tuesday Nov. 6, Wed. Dec. 12 and Tue., March 18. The Berkeley performances are on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you are interested in this for your student, please send a note to that effect to Mr. Athayde and indicate how many tickets you would like to have.

Fred Randolph Jazz Combo Classes

There is no fee charged for these classes. If you would like to contribute to the Generations in Jazz Foundation, the optional suggested donation would be $108. Any donations above $108 per session would be tax-deductible; anything up to $108 would be considered a fee for service.

Classes will be offered at 3:15pm on Wednesday afternoons. Fall quarter classes will begin Wednesday, September 5th and end December 12th.

Please drop off the registration form with Mrs. Ginni Reynolds in the Stanley music department building, before September 5th. It is important to return the form before the first day of class in order to satisfy liability requirements.

SF Symphony Chorus Director Visits

Our most recent visitor to the Stanley Music Department was Ragnar Bohlin, newly appointed Dirctor of Chorus for the San Francisco Symphony. His visit was arranged by Miss Xiomara DiMaio (an LASF mentor who sings with the SF Symphony Chorus). Mr. Bohlin visited Concert Gold and I asked him to conduct the piece they recently performed at the Spring Concert: Mars. Mr. Bohlin gave the band great insight into the music, even though he had never seen the score. He also gave me some wonderful pointers on conducting and interpretation.

I am constantly amazed and pleasantly surprised by the renowned people who come to our department on their own time to share their knowledge and love of music with our students. I surely appreciate it. My hope is that the students do also!

LASF Funds Stanley Choral Music Program

Lafayette Arts & Science Foundation (LASF) is funding a new class at Stanley Middle School to help build its choral music program. "I'm excited about LASF's involvement in expanding the program," said Bruce Lengacher, Acalanes High School choral director.
